GES-2 House of Culture’s third film festival explores expressions of community and co-creation in contemporary auteur cinema and archival classics.

Cinema is an inherently collective art form, impossible without the collaboration of countless individuals and specialised departments. Yet this has not stopped filmmakers across countries and eras from seeking to dismantle the hierarchies of film production—from finding like-minded collaborators to form creative collectives and cooperatives.

The House of Culture’s third themed festival is devoted to such auteur partnerships—past and present, fleeting and long-lasting, intimate and sprawling.

Having examined unconventional methods and practices of filmmaking, the festival then turns to cinema’s unique capacity to reflect and convey the collective experience of all manner of groups. For ultimately, the question that preoccupied Jean-Luc Godard and many other classic directors—how to make films together as equals—must be followed by another: how to exist together? Several brand-new films, screening as Russian premieres, offer their own answers.
