Where does the night road lead? The answer remains unspoken but visible. Boarded-up rural houses. Calves, ducks, and goats wandering along village streets. A makeshift market and a merry-go-round with laughing children. Huge statues of Buddha, meticulously carved and painted by workers.

Tsai Ming-liang, who once transformed the landscape of world auteur cinema, has been working without scripts or conventional storylines since the early 2010s. Much like the workers carving wooden Buddhas, he strips away everything superfluous from his cinema. What remains? The director leaves it up to each viewer to find the answer, filling the Laotian landscapes with personal thoughts, memories, and feelings.
