What constitutes a live performance? How many artists must one experience to understand a musical community? How does space affect the perception of musical content? In exploring the distinctive features of the contemporary music scene and reimagining its current state, the GES-2: Sound curatorial team turns to the showcase format.

A showcase—as the name suggests—is a format enabling artists, musical communities, and record labels to present their finest musical works and realise their boldest ideas. Showcases have long been an integral part of the music industry and a traditional format for many music festivals. However, at GES-2 House of Culture, we aim to expand this concept: here, the showcase becomes a laboratory for experimentation, where music meets contemporary art and architecture. The showcase format features consecutive short live performances.
These showcases unite a series of events where music becomes a research tool. Through the interaction between artists, musicians, musical communities, listeners, and the acoustic properties of GES-2’s building, the programme creators aim to immerse visitors in the context of local sound, its formation, characteristics, and diversity. The programme will also enable the House of Culture team to research and archive contemporary context through musical and sound practices. Events taking place in the public spaces of Renzo Piano’s building break down the barrier between stage and audience, engaging listeners in the process of understanding sound and music.
