The silent, pensive heroine of Jia Zhangke’s film travels from Chinese Taishan to Turin to reunite with her husband, who runs a restaurant there. But she fails to find him and embarks not so much on a search for him as on a quest for the shadows of her native places in an unfamiliar European city. These shadows lead the woman to the National Museum of Cinema—and to her true self.

In a film by the founders of the world-famous Factory of the Eccentric Actor (FEKS) collective, shot exactly a hundred years ago, sailor Vanya Shorin comes ashore in 1920s Leningrad to live out his criminal odyssey. 

The screening will be accompanied by an improvised concert by pianist Artem Makoyan and drummer Daniil Kholodkov.
