This mediated tour is a discussion on the interaction between art, public space, and the viewer, based on the Square and Space. From Malevich to GES-2 exhibition.

English-language mediated tours of GES-2 House of Culture typically take place on Friday evenings. To learn more about group tours or to request one, please email us at mediationcalls@v-a-c.org .

How does the contemporary viewer interact with art? How did Malevich’s Black Square influence thinking and artistic approaches a century ago, and how do we see this work today? How does our perception of a painting, sculpture, or installation change depending on where it is displayed? These questions are raised by the new exhibition at GES-2. A variety of works from different artistic periods reveal familiar problems: tradition versus innovation and realistic depiction of the world versus attempts to change the very method of perceiving it.

One century ago, art spilled out of the canvas, spreading its investigative and creative potential to different fields of culture and life. Today, the boundary between art and everyday life is being erased, with public spaces becoming a canvas, whether they are a city square or a House of Culture. The defining quality of any masterpiece is the possibility of active interaction and co-existence with it.

We invite you to discuss these and other topics with the mediator during a stroll through the twelve sections of the exhibition.
