Twenty-eight-year-old billionaire and currency trader Eric Packer left home this morning to get a haircut. The city is stuck in traffic, so right there in his limousine, Packer receives one partner, assistant, and rival after another, stubbornly ignoring both the yuan’s staggering fall and the fact that the world outside his car window is descending into utter madness.

After spending years making prestige and genre films, Cronenberg returned to the crystal waters of the wired mind-benders from his early years and found he could still swim beautifully.

The film is based on the eponymous novel by Don DeLillo, and the original’s ornate language is transformed into on-screen dialogue. Without a single special effect, the director creates a compelling portrait of the modern world’s collapse, and 15 years after, it is impossible not to see the fulfilled prophecy in it.
