Neapolitan Ada smuggles goods to feed her family and is constantly pregnant, as the law prohibits sending mothers-to-be to prison. In Milan, Anna, the wife of a successful businessman, has an affair with the poor Renzo and sets off with him in her Rolls-Royce. In Rome, the prostitute Mara makes the seminarian Umberto fall in love with her and then gives him a vow of chastity — but how long will she be able to keep her word?

De Sica demonstrates his considerable versatility by showing that he is just as adept at light comedy as he is at tragic social commentary.
