The train heads west, carrying to a new life Yella, who miraculously managed to catch it, wiping blood from her forehead. She has just separated from her husband and is moving from East Germany to prosperous Hanover in the hope of finding a better job. There, the heroine finds herself caught up in a web of corporate intrigue, financial machinations. and relationships with predatory, shady men—and then the shadows of the past creep into this world.

Shot from Yella2007

Petzold, a leading light of the current generation of young German filmmakers, succeeds in making the modern world strange again.

— Chris Darke, Film Comment

Yella, part of Christian Petzold’s “ghost trilogy,” is reminiscent of Hitchcock in its elegant and effective use of thriller genre mechanics, while consistently exposing the Freudian uncanny in the modern landscape of glass and steel.
