Mom is on drugs, dad is an alcoholic, and ten-year-old Daniel is picking fights and eventually gets kicked out of school. But what is he to do in a dying town on the fringes of Australia? Only to seek the company of the local drug dealer and troublemaker.

Shot from Toomelah, 2011

The film’s actors are almost all non-professionals, and Sen gets some mesmerizingly authentic performances out of them.

What unites Ivan Sen’s film with Asanova’s works is not only the attempt to combine the social with the personal, but above all the ability to see an inner drama behind the child’s prickly gaze.
