Teenage gangs are fighting on the streets of Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the centre of the conflict is 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis. He reads books, loves cinema and is quite unlike his peers, but his fate is sealed: the young man will have to bid farewell to his childhood and find himself caught up in a web of crime.

Still from The Outsiders, 1983
Angels with dirty faces but immaculately pure hearts burn with a hard, gemlike flame before being snuffed out in their prime.
—Gilbert Adair, Sight & Sound
Coppola made the film based on Susan Hinton’s book, published in the late 1960s, and virtually all the young actors went on to become Hollywood stars.
