With younger pupils, we shall decipher codes and uncover the secrets of time and space. We shall discover whether our hands and feet are sufficient to measure everything around us, how many spans are hidden in one arshin, and how to create our own treasure map. Armed with analogue clocks, we shall examine their mechanisms and learn to tell the time. We shall also undertake several exercises to better sense the passage of time. At the end of the session, we shall craft ancient timepieces that would continue to function even on a desert island.
With secondary and sixth form pupils, we shall explore the concepts of rhythm, harmony and balance. We shall discover where mathematics is concealed in photography, and what dance and architecture have in common. We shall discuss temporal distortions, harmony, and symmetry. We shall attempt to find balance whilst standing on one leg and maintaining rhythm. Having learned the recipe for the “perfect photograph”, we shall create a series of photographic works in which we shall conceal complex mathematical formulae. And after becoming acquainted with the rhythm of
