1959, American military base in Germany. 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu arrives at a party—and meets the eyes of the already famous Elvis Presley, who is undergoing service. The star starts courting the schoolgirl—and after having served, suddenly disappears, only to turn up three years later and invite Priscilla to visit him in Graceland.

Sofia Coppola, who, like very few others in contemporary cinema, can tell a story of a girl's coming of age, is not so much interested in recounting the facts of the couple's marriage as in the feelings Priscilla encountered when she was stunned not only by life at Graceland, but also by the loneliness, silence and isolation to which her husband condemned her.
Coppola has made in some ways a darker, more claustrophobic film than usual without sacrificing her airiness or sense of humor.
