At a seaside retreat, a nurse named Alma tends to the actress Elisabeth and spends day after day trying to find a way to reach her—to elicit, if not a response, then at least a word. In this imaginary dialogue, the nurse shares her life with the patient—her experiences, erotic upheavals, and traumas.

Ingmar Bergman’s new film Persona, as I see it, is a reminder of our proximity to the ultimate borderline, where language breaks down, images are rent asunder and reality dissolves.

—Mauritz Edström, Dagens Nyheter

A subdued drama in which the heroines grapple with the loss of their own identities.
