Two Buddhist monks knock on the Conrad family’s door: they have been brought here by a dream that nine-year-old Jesse is the reincarnation of the recently deceased Dalai Lama. The boy, accompanied by his father, is sent to Bhutan, where he will undergo mandatory tests. In parallel, the story of other tests unfolds on the screen—those that Prince Siddhartha once underwent in order to gain enlightenment and become the Buddha.

Shot from Little Buddha, 1993

Untouched by cynicism and irony, Little Buddha has the wide-eyed, innocent feel of a fable.

— Joe Brown, The Washington Post

Bertolucci brings together the ancient and the modern, finding a unique visual style for each storyline, and reflects on the ideas of Buddhism in a clear and thorough manner.
