Before us is a portrait of a mature and weary man who lost his wife eight years ago. His daughter selflessly supports her father, whilst his son has long since been living in another country. As his life draws to a close, the protagonist is burdened with serious responsibilities: deciding whether to legalise or ban euthanasia, or whether to pardon the husband who strangled his wife. He is destined to be at the centre of any such decision, because he is the President of Italy.
