Nothing less than an up-to-the-minute report on the American state of mind—on the epidemic inability to distinguish fact from fiction
— Richard Brody, The New Yorker
Although Carrie’s father’s invention is made up, his very figure is almost identical to that of the late father of Callie Hernandez, the lead actress and co-writer of the movie. The man was a doctor who sold a variety of unscientific remedies. Around the real loss, the film’s authors build a crafty neo-noir full of black humor and anxiety, and even create a new cinematic language.
