Herzog’s films often focus on natural phenomena and passionate individuals whose energy has the power to change the world around them. This time, the spotlight is on Steve Boyes, a South African naturalist who has dedicated his life to searching for giant elephants that have previously eluded researchers. The film crew sets off on an expedition to fulfil Boyes’ dream and track down the forest giant, whilst Herzog finds in the scientist a figure no less captivating than Timothy Treadwell from his seminal Grizzly Man (2005).

Shot from Ghost Elephants, 2025

Ghost Elephants resides in the intersection of science and lyrical reverie—Herzog’s treasured terrain. Here, the filmmaker focuses less on the elephants and more on the pursuers, the dreamers.
