Fjord

A Christian family fights European bureaucracy in the winning film of the Cannes Film Festival.

2026, Cristian Mungiu

Romania–France–Norway–Denmark–Finland–Sweden
146 minutes, English with Russian subtitles

Starring: Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, Lisa Carlehed, Henrikke Lund-Olsen

The Georgiu family, with their many children, move from Romania to a small Norwegian town. The father, Mihai, a devout Christian, forbids his children from using mobile phones and social media, and can be harsh to ensure they obey. This is unacceptable in Scandinavia – and when the Georgious’ eldest daughter’s teachers notice a bruise on her shoulder, the child welfare services intervene in the family’s life.

Still from Fjord, 2026

It’s a juicy subject that Mungiu takes on dryly, at times clinically and with punctuating dark comedy.

— Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Director Cristian Mungiu exposes the sore spots of the modern world through sharp, masterfully constructed dramas. His new film offers a diagnosis for the entire continent, even the planet, obsessed with ideological wars between the left and the right, believers and atheists.
