A film with the title taken from Malcolm X’s famous speech has made Khalik Allah a rising star in documentary filmmaking. The director finds modern-day “field niggas” at a New York street corner that since the 1960s has been frequented by drug users and sex workers on the one hand, and on the other, those who exploit them, from dealers to the police. The paradox is that the film is not so much a curse on the dreadful conditions in which its characters survive as an attempt to see dignity and beauty in this survival.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film director Khalik Allah.

Shot from Field Niggas, 2015

An intimate movie with a metaphysical grandeur.

— Richard Brody, The New Yorker
