A multifaceted portrait of the genius of Italian horror, director of Suspiria and Deep Red. Screening as part of Beat Film Festival 2024.
It was Dario Argento who made giallo, that particular subgenre of horror films that surpassed Hitchcock in brutality, frankness and brazenness, an object of global pop culture that still inspires filmmakers around the world. In Simone Scafidi’s film, the director’s colleagues, friends and relatives talk about this inspiration—namely Gaspar Noé and Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn and Vittorio Cecchi Gori, as well as Argento’s wife, their daughter Asia and the actresses of his major films.
Shot from Dario Argento Panico, 2024
“Everything in Argento’s movies is trying to kill you,” opines Guillermo del Toro, one of the documentary’s most valuable and perceptive contributors.
