Modern love is born of obsession and voyeurism in the film by the Polish master.

19-year-old Tomek spends his evenings peering through a telescope at a woman in the opposite house. She changes boyfriends like gloves and often cries. These tears first make Tomek fall in love with the stranger, and then make him decide to reveal his existence to her.

Still from A Short Film About Love, 1988

Well aware that Hitchcock and Michael Powell have been down these streets before him, Kieslowski turns in an absolutely masterly movie that yields equal parts of humour and wry emotional truth.

—Tony Rayns, TimeOut

From the plot about obsessive voyeurism, Kieślowski develops a profound reflection on the fragile and sombre nature of emotions in the modern world—and in the internet age, his observations seem even more relevant.
