Sabina Spielrein, a young woman suffering from hysteria, arrives at Carl Jung’s clinic in Switzerland. Intelligent and refined, she quickly responds to the doctor’s methods and eventually becomes a doctor and theorist of psychoanalysis herself. Furthermore, Sabina finds herself at the centre of a dramatic rift in the relationship between Jung and Freud, who regarded him as his heir.

Shot from A Dangerous Method, 2011

It’s a fiercely thoughtful film, a movie of ideas that understands how powerful ideas can be.

—Dana Stevens, Slate

Cronenberg finds a way to convey the mindset within the Freud—Jung—Spielrein triangle and to infect the viewer with it, and then reveals the distinctly Chekhovian nature of his characters, adding a touch of irony to their dialogue.
