Five centimetres per second is the speed at which a cherry blossom petal falls from the branch to the ground. At the same pace, Takaki becomes estranged from his first love Akari, whose family has moved far away. Soon the correspondence ceases—but Takaki’s feelings will not fade away even five or fifteen years later.

Shinkai has been hailed as the next Miyazaki, and his dreamy mindscapes often equal or surpass the anime maestro in breadth of detail and depth of emotion.

Makoto Shinkai’s visually mesmerising three-part anime poem became a cult favourite when it was released in the 2000s, and can now be rightfully considered a classic. His expressive animation, capable of depicting the rustling of sakura leaves or the snow covering the railway tracks separating the characters, is worth the price of admission alone.
