Philippe, an heir to a large fortune, is having fun in Rome with his fiancée Marge. Suddenly his old acquaintance Tom Ripley appears: he was sent by Philippe’s parents to persuade their son to return to America and take over the family business. Philippe is reluctant to return, and Tom does not want to go back either—he is more enticed by his friend’s carefree lifestyle.

Delon is terrifically good in the role: his almost unearthly perfection is creepy itself, as if he is imitating a human being.
— Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
The director cleverly plays on the contrasts between the film’s sunny palette and the darkness inside the protagonist’s soul. But Clement’s main tool is Alain Delon himself, whose impossible beauty serves as a constant source of screen tension.
