Canadian documentary filmmaker Leonard Fife squints his eyes. He can hardly get out of bed due to his illness, his wife is fidgeting, and there are film crew members around, who have come to record an interview with him. The hero recalls the times when in the 1960s he lived in another country, was married to another woman and was drafted to the Vietnam War.

There’s much to like here, particularly in Gere’s vulnerable performance and just how openly Schrader is expressing what feels like his own concerns about aging, regret, and reputation.

Paul Schrader, screenwriter of Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, has made a technically tense and piercingly emotional film that centres on a complex, compelling character played by Jacob Elordi in one era and Richard Gere in another.
