Interactive tour for school groups on the exhibition A Cup of Consonances. Approaching Rozanova.

The lesson is adapted for pupils of the junior, middle and senior school. The materials were prepared in accordance with Federal state educational standards, and may supplement the school curriculum in the following subjects: art history, literature, social studies, and history.

T

The works of Olga Rozanova, the “first female artist of Petrograd,” as the poet Alexei Kruchenykh called her, show us that a still life can be alarming, a portrait exalted, and an abstract composition painful or poetic. The tour will inform pupils about her works in different genres and styles.

During the tour, we will discuss the artistic situation in Russia in the early twentieth century, different stages in Rozanova’s artistic career—primitivism, cubo-futurism, and suprematism, and also learn the meaning of the concept “transformed colour” that she introduced. Pupils will be assisted in the discussion with a special dictionary: this special analytical grid built on the principle of opposition will help to form a more subtle and profound understanding of the painting of the Russian avantgarde.
