In the 1970s, there were few musicians in the world as popular as David Bowie. But by the mid-1980s, he had grown noticeably weary of his own stardom and started to withdraw from public life, eventually going completely silent for a decade. Just when no one was expecting it, Bowie made a triumphant return with one of his most successful albums, followed by a new one in January 2016—only to leave this world for good two days later.

Director John Stiasny can avoid the most documented, mythologised parts of Bowie’s career—namely Ziggy and Berlin—to create an essay on mortality and creativity as much as a biography.

Focusing on the artist’s life after the peak of his fame, Jonathan Stiasny’s film avoids clichés and major hits, instead compiling a complex mosaic of archive footage, memories and reflections from Bowie’s friends and colleagues.
