Pierre, who dropped out of law school to “change painting forever”, has known Marthe for only half an hour: he saw her on the street and asked her to pose for him. After a couple of montages, the pair make love — and end up spending the next half-century together. The film’s plot revolves around the dramatic twists and turns in the Bonnars’ relationship, but it is also a portrait of a woman who finds herself through art.

Writer-director Martin Provost sidesteps most of the potential pitfalls that would render this fact-based material stiff or didactic. We know that Bonnard will sell his daring pictures, but he doesn’t — yet.
