Lina’s Plant

Composer Ivan Bushuev has created the piece “Lina’s Plant” especially for the preview of the exhibition project “If These Walls Were Water. Lina Bo Bardi.”

Commissioning music for exhibition previews is one of the ways GES-2 House of Culture works with contemporary composers. Their compositions are inspired by the central themes of new projects, allowing audiences to gain deeper insight into the artistic and curatorial vision.

Lina’s Plant was created for the opening of this exhibition about the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s leading Brazilian architects. Composer Ivan Bushuev, whose works have previously been performed at the House of Culture during the Tuning-2 project and What is the Contemporary? programme, mirrors Lina Bo Bardi’s approach in his music. Just as she sought to balance nature, urban environment, and national culture in her architectural practice, Bushuev combines complex soundscapes with Brazilian musical influences.

“When I was working on this piece, I imagined Lina Bo Bardi’s garden with its distinctive ‘plant-structures.’ They climb and intertwine with each other like melodies, creating ornaments and patterns. I looked at Lina’s drawings and thought about how naively and tenderly she incorporates charming, heartfelt details into her architectural webs.

Reflecting on the title of the project and examining photographs of the Glass House—one of the architect’s major works—I felt above all the pulsation of materials, their beating and rustling. We hear this trembling in the rhythms of the track, which doesn’t maintain a dance rhythm but spreads like a line stretching towards the horizon.

In the second half of the track, we hear fragments of a radio broadcast in which we can distinguish perhaps one of the most popular pieces of Brazilian music—Bachianas Brasileiras no. 5 by Heitor Villa-Lobos. The radio broadcast motif unites melodies, harmonies, noises, and field recordings, after which the music gradually returns to pulsation and trembling.”
